El Gigante del Sal

Landmark at the Castell of Moraira

Directly at the Castell of Moraira, the “Gigante de Sal” commemorates the maritime history of the region while offering a special viewpoint overlooking the sea.

El Gigante del Sal – A Giant with History

On the esplanade of the castle of Moraira stands “El Gigante del Sal,” one of the most impressive works of art in the region. The monumental bronze sculpture by the internationally renowned artist duo Coderch & Malavia captivates visitors with its expressiveness and symbolism.

Before finding its permanent home in Moraira, the sculpture was exhibited in various European cities, gaining significant international attention.

The “Gigante” is inspired by a Butoh dance performance by the artist Fred Herrera. This dance style, originating from Japan, developed after World War II and represents the exploration of destruction, transformation, and renewal.

The sculpture embraces these themes and symbolizes human resilience and the ability to find new strength even after severe crises. Particularly in light of recent global events, “El Gigante del Sal” has become a powerful symbol of hope and renewal.
