Calpe's giant lime rock

Calpe's landmark, the Peñón de Ifach, is rising 332 metres above sea level. It is connectd to the mainland only by a narrow hook.

The boulder that covers the size of around 45 hectars is known as Europe's smallest natural park that is inhabited by 300 rare species of plant and more than 80 species of bird, including nesting and migrant birds as well as birds of passage.

The information centre “Naturaula Penyal d'Ifac“ (Tel.: 96 597 20 15) is located on the foot of the mountain, situated above the harbour. The centre offers various information on visiting and getting to know the nature preserve.

The ascent to the top of the Peñón de Ifach takes about 1 to 2 hours, including rather steep and rocky passages. The hiking trail also leads through a small tunnel up to the windy summit of the lime rock where visitors have spectacular views. On clear days you can even see Ibiza.
